Dear Readers,

Gene therapy is one of the most exciting developments in modern medicine. By modifying or replacing faulty genes, this approach seeks to treat diseases at their very source. In recent years, it has gained special attention in ophthalmology, as many eye disorders have a strong genetic basis.

The success of Luxturna the first approved gene therapy for an inherited retinal disease—has shown that restoring sight through genetic treatment is possible. Researchers are now exploring similar approaches for conditions like retinitis pigmentosa, Leber congenital amaurosis, and age-related macular degeneration. These efforts open a new horizon of hope for patients who previously had very limited treatment options.

This site news covers the general aspects of gene therapy, its application in eye care, and the key advantages and disadvantages shaping its future.
